Meet Our Participants
Meet Sue, Rider #34, from Prior Lake, MN.
Why She's Participating: "When my sister-in law was diagnosed with breast cancer I felt helpless. Early detection and aggressive treatment saved her life. Her outcome might have been different if not for the organizations that fight this awful disease. I realized I could not fight her fight for her but I could support organizations that help win the battle. SO...I joined the BCR team to wage the war against breast cancer!"
More About Sue: "My husband Mark and I have been with the Ride since the beginning but last year I took a leap of faith and became a Rider. I now have seen the Ride from both sides - event management and riding - it is an amazing experience! I love riding with Mark - together we ride for those fighting, ride in celebration for those who have won their battle and ride in loving honor and memory for those whom we have lost! We ride to fight and celebrate with Sarah, we celebrate with Aunt Kathy and ride in memory of my Grandmother, Amanda, Colleen and John."
Favorite Snack While Cycling: "Pearson's Nut Rolls or Trail mix with M&M's."
Meet Jan, Rider #5, from (as she puts it) "formerly of Edina, now McGregor, MN and Ft Lauderdale, FL (so I can bike all year!)"
Why Jan Is Participating: "This will be the 9th time I've participated in the Breast Cancer Ride. I'm both a volunteer and rider, as my friend Nita and I go out with a team the day before the ride and put up the bright red direction arrows that help the riders stay on the route. Then I'm back with my bike the next morning happy to hit the trail."
Who Jan Rides For: "The Ride is important to me because we've lost too many wonderful women to this nasty disease, including my cousin Nancy and aunt Stella, who gave so much to the world as a nurse and teacher respectively and who were taken far too early. I want to do everything I can to raise awareness and help women who are struggling with this diagnosis."
Kudos from Jan: "I can't say enough about the terrific volunteers along the route who make the Ride so much fun and provide such great support. I always look forward to each Pit Stop to see what treats are in store."
Favorite Snack While Cycling: "Love those orange slices!"
Meet Aaron W, Rider #12, from Farmington, MN.
Why Aaron Is Participating: "This will be my third year riding in the BCR. I ride in celebration of my wife Tammy, who is a 6 year breast cancer survivor. The pain and uncertainty my wife went through during surgery, radiation, and recovery was tough for her to endure and difficult for family and friends to watch. Her courage and optimism was inspiring. I want to do what I can to join with the riders, volunteers, and staff of Charity Events of Minnesota to raise awareness and funding for organizations that support folks battling breast cancer. Let's beat this disease, help those currently struggling, and celebrate those we've lost."
Aaron's Message to Others: "Let's ride. The folks that put on this event, volunteer, and participate are awesome. It's a great cause and a wonderful event. Come ride."(Legal disclaimer: Aaron was only compensated with one thousand hugs for that recruitment plug.)
Favorite Snack While Cycling: "Oatmeal raisin granola bars. After cycling, beer."
